Shown in Berkeley Civic Center December 15 through January 15

Berkeley, California (Tuesday, December 13, 2005) - Art projects proposed for the West Berkeley Rail Stop  will go on public view December 15 through January 15 at  the City of Berkeley Civic Center, first floor,. 2180 Milvia Street, Berkeley, California, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Please note: the City  Center is closed during the week of December 26 through January 2. The viewing public will have an opportunity to comment and state their preferences in written form for submission to the Selection Panel.  After interviewing each of the finalists and previewing their models, the Selection Panel will make its final determination to forward to the full Civic Arts Commission for a final vote.

Seventeen artist teams applied to the Rail Stop Public Art Project Call for Artists, sent out early last spring. Artists in all nine Bay Area Counties were eligible to apply. The project includes a treatment for the east wall and for the columns in the parking area leading to the train stop. A selection panel met in the fall of this year and chose three finalists and one alternate in an open meeting held at the West Berkeley Senior Center.

This Selection Panel was made up of members from the Civic Arts Commission, an experienced public artist, a mural artist, members of the business community, a neighborhood community church Pastor, a representative of the West Berkeley PAC, and the project architect. The Chair of the Civic Arts Commission, a representative of the Berkeley Redevelopment Agency, and Chair of the Civic Arts Commission's Public Art Committee served as non-voting advisors. The Selection Panel initially chose the final three artist teams after viewing slides and written statements from seventeen applicant artists.

The Berkeley Redevelopment Agency funded $65,626 to support this project as part of the City's 1.5% for Art Program. To view the Call for Artists and read more information on this public art project please see the Civic Arts web page at: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/civicarts/publicart.htm For further information please contact the Berkeley Public Art Program, located in 2180 Milvia Street, 3rd Floor, Berkeley, California, 94704, (510) 981-7533, or email mmerker@ci.berkeley.ca.us.
