Celebration and Fundraiser for South Berkeley Youth

Berkeley, California (Thursday, December 08, 2005) - Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, Berkeley City Councilmembers and community members will honor Maudelle Shirek at a reception and celebration on Saturday, December 10 at 4:00 p.m.  Friends, family and community members will join in celebrating the achievements of retired Councilmember and life-long social justice activist Maudelle Shirek at a tribute event on Saturday, December 10.

In honor of Ms. Shirek, the City of Berkeley’s Civic Arts Comission will release its call for artists for a public artwork depicting the history of African-Americans in Berkeley.  The celebration will also serve as a fundraiser for the Maudelle Shirek Scholarship Fund, which will be awarded to underprivileged South Berkeley youth.

Maudelle Shirek served eight terms on the Berkeley City Council and ended her career in political office as one of the oldest elected officials in California. Ms. Shirek moved to Berkeley in the 1940s and immediately gained a reputation for her dedication to civil rights issues. She was active in the anti-war movement, was a staunch union supporter, founded two Berkeley senior centers, championed HIV/AIDS awareness, and helped organize the Free Mandela movement. Throughout her career, she has encouraged young people to become politically involved.  Her devotion to fighting for social justice has made lasting marks in the City of Berkeley and the world.
