About Berkeley: Character Sketch

On May 20, 2008, the City Council recognized publisher Malcolm Margolin for the contribution Heyday Books has made to Berkeley's cultural and civic life. Mr. Margolin returned the compliment and praised the City Council and the Berkeley community. He also distributed a long quote from his book "Berkeley Inside/Out" to  the Council members and the public, which is reprinted below (with permission).

"Despite the glib characterizations of the national media, there is no such thing as a typical Berkeley resident. There is no single symbol that can be used to represent all of Berkeley. There is not even one single duality--town-gown, black-white, hills-flatlands, left-right, etc.-- that adequately defines the city. Berkeley has become a city of diverse neighborhoods and even more diverse constituencies, bound together not by common beliefs and values but by the gifts of its historic past-- its semi-independent neighborhoods, its political activism, its architectural distinctiveness, its artistic vitality, and more than anything else, a thrust toward idealism and utopianism that is still woven strongly into the civic fabric and the daily life of those who live here."

You can watch the entire ceremony online here, http://berkeley.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?publish_id=469, about 12:30 minutes into the meeting.
