  BERKELEY WITHOUT SHADOW

January 20 - February 27, 2009

"Berkeley Without Shadow,"  an exhibition of  photographs that explore downtown Berkeley by a UC Berkeley photography class will be shown at the Addison Street Windows Gallery from January 20, 2009 through February 27, 2009. There will be a sidewalk opening reception on Friday, January 23 from 6 to 8 p.m., where limited edition books of the student work will be available for order. The exhibition is free, wheelchair accessible, and on view 24 hours a day.  The gallery is located at 2018 Addison Street, Berkeley, CA  94704.

In spring 2008, a class of 14 UC Berkeley students began a project to produce a photographic document of downtown Berkeley.  These students examined the current life of downtown Berkeley to learn how cities work and to make an historical record of how this eclectic city looks and feels.

The student photographers took camera lenses to a wide variety of views of Berkeley- from panoramic images of the downtown area to people on bikes and buses, on the streets at night and in restaurants and jazz clubs and portraits of Berkeley High School students. The unique viewpoints echo the range of their academic interests. Their disciplines include architecture, linguistics, history and mass communications.

This project is supported by the Downtown Berkeley Association and The Consortium for the Arts at UC Berkeley.  The student photographers are: John Viet, Patrici Flores, Aileen Zhao, Barton Ching, Aaron Liu, Justin Syren, So Rae Yoo, Salgu Wissmath, Chanel Leaf, Ivana Goldstein, Anna Hiatt, Michael Zhang, Lauren Wynveen, Unchung Na.

The Addison Street Windows Gallery is a project of the Civic Arts Program of the City of Berkeley in cooperation with the Civic Arts Commission.
