Addison Street Windows Gallery
2018 Addison Street, Berkeley
April 20th to May 31st, 2010

Donna Mendes and Pete Najarian are two Berkeley landscape painters, both working in oil, who approach their work from different perspectives. Najarian paints plein air in and around Berkeley, while Mendes paints in her studio from imagination, sometimes using photographs and sketches for inspiration. Najarian creates landscapes that draw the viewer in to engage in the physical geography, while Mendes creates a barrier between the viewer and the scene, as though peeling the canvas back to see what's on the other side, conveying a sense of distance, isolation and mystery.

The contrast between the two painters challenges viewers to explore different parts of their own consciousness, to recognize internal and external responses to an environment perceived or real.
These recent works of Donna Mendes and Peter Najarian can be viewed side by side at the Addison Street Windows Gallery between Milvia and Shattuck Streets in Berkeley from April 20th to May 31st, 2010.  The exhibition can be viewed 24 hours a day from the sidewalk on Addison Street.

Pete Najarian has been painting for the past twenty five years. His work has been exhibited in the Hearst Gallery of St. Mary's College, The Napa Valley Museum, The SoMa Gallery of San Francisco, and The Artist's Union of Soviet Armenia.  He is also a novelist who has illustrated his own books. His new book "The Artist and His Mother" will be published in the fall of 2010 by Fresno University Press.

Born in New York, Donna Mendes has been making art ever since she can remember. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in Fine Art. Mendes has exhibited on the east and west coast, has had commissioned works, and her work is held in many private collections. She has had a Graphic Design business for over ten years: her digital illustrations have been published in MacDesign Magazine (now known as Layers Magazine) September/October 2004 and January /February 2005.

The Addison Street Windows Gallery is a project of the Civic Arts Program of the City of Berkeley in cooperation with the Civic Arts Commission.
