Berkeley’s 2020 Vision participants are working diligently to determine how to create institutional policies and procedures that support equitable education. Many important avenues of work have surfaced, and participants are collaborating to pursue goals in six areas through teams called “Working Groups.” The formation of these Working Groups and their goals gives direction to the work of sustaining equity in education in Berkeley. The Workgroups also help align Berkeley’s resources for children and youth to maximize their impact.

1. Kindergarten Readiness: Getting kindergarteners “ready to learn” as determined by BUSD’s Universal Screening Assessment in sound/letter identification, counting objects and oral language development.

2. Third Grade Reading Proficiency: Helping third graders read at or above grade level by BUSD measures.

3. Ninth Grade Math Proficiency: Preparing ninth graders to score at or above grade level with BUSD’s math assessment.

4. Attendance: Inspiring students to stay in school to reduce chronic absenteeism, which is when students miss 10% or more of school days.

5. College & Career Readiness: Increasing the number of students eligible to enroll and ready to succeed in higher education.

6. Community Engagement: Engaging everyone in the community to create an equitable educational environment for all Berkeley’s children.
