PG&E is reporting a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers in Berkeley and many City buildings, including the Finance Customer Service Center and the Permit Service Center. Call respective City services for further details, or check the PG&E outage page. Power is expected to return by 12:45pm. Traffic lights that are not working should be treated as a four-way stop sign.

2020 Exemplary Knighton Award 

For the second year in a row, the City of Berkeley Auditor’s office has won the Association of Local Government Auditor’s top national audit award, the Exemplary Knighton Award. This award was given for Berkeley’s audit, Rocky Road: Berkeley Streets at Risk and Significantly UnderfundedJudges from peer audit organizations found that this streets audit was the best audit by a small sized audit office. Focusing on the report’s potential for significant impact, persuasiveness of conclusions, focus on improving government efficiency and effectiveness, and clarity and concision, the judges found that it was easy to read, thorough, and well-documented. Additionally, the judges found that the recommendations related back to strategic goals and had a focus on equity and inclusion. Congratulations to the audit team for this award: Erin Mullin, Claudette Biemeret, and Tracy Yarlott-Davis. 

2019 Exemplary Knighton Award

The City of Berkeley Auditor’s Office won the 2019 Exemplary Knighton Award for best performance in the medium ship category for the report 911 Dispatchers: Understaffing Leads to Excessive Overtime and Low Morale. The audit’s objective was to investigate to what extent the Communications Center, which answers 911 calls, has sufficient staffing to handle certain workloads and service demands, what contributes to overtime use, and how working conditions affect morale. The report found that the Communications Center does not have enough staffers to tackle the call volume, that calls take longer to answer than previous years, and that the Center relies heavily on overtime to meet staffing requirements. The judges found that the report was clearly presented and engaging, and that the conclusions and supporting data were strong and convincing. 

 

2018 Distinguished Knighton Award

The City of Berkeley Auditors Office's report, Stronger Oversight Necessary to Ensure Continued Assistance for Severely Physically Disabled Persons, won the 2018 Distinguished Knighton Award in the medium shop category. The audit evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of Berkeley's Easy Does It program, which provides services to senior citizens and severely disabled people in Berkeley. The judges found the subject matter of the report easy to comprehend and the recommends logical and consistent with the findings of the report. 

2018 ALGA Lifetime Achievement Award

In May 2018, the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA) honored former City of Berkeley City Auditor Ann‑Marie Hogan with the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award for dedicating her career to the advancement and support of performance auditing.  

 Ann-Marie Hogan 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner   Ann-Marie is a distinguished award recipient for proudly and competently serving the City of Berkeley with a message of government transparency and accountability. Her achievements include serving as an ALGA Board Member and member of several other ALGA committees. Her principal contribution has been as a chair, member, or advisor to the ALGA Advocacy Committee since 2002. As an advocated, she assisted more than 30 jurisdictions in their efforts to establish or strengthen an audit function by drafting letters of support, reviewing proposed legislation, testifying before government bodies, providing informational resources and tools, making phone calls, and answering questions. Ann Marie has contributed to numerous publications to promote independent, local government auditing, including the last three revisions of ALGA’s Model Legislation and Guidance on Outsourcing. She was also a principal author of the Institute of Internal Auditors 2006 practice guide, The Role of Auditing in Public Sector Governance. Ann Marie has been a consistent, strong voice in support of independent, local government auditing. Her many contributions exemplify the type of professional who clearly deserves the recognition and distinction of the ALGA Lifetime Achievement Award.
