December 2014 Winter Storms

On December 11, 2014, rainfall was predicted to be so significant that it was described by meteorologists as a "river in the sky". In support of the City of Berkeley’s storm response, Berkeley CERT was activated to mitigate anticipated flooding. Working alongside the City’s Public Works Department, CERT volunteers deployed to clear leaves and debris from key storm drains around the city and to create hundreds of sandbags to be distributed to community members to be used to protect homes, businesses, and neighborhoods in Berkeley. In the hours leading up to the storm, volunteers raked almost 100 bags of leaf debris preventing clogged storm drains and made almost 400 sandbags that were immediately deployed.

Because of their prior training and readiness to help others in our community, CERT members were able to accomplish their mission and get back indoors before the storm arrived. CERT members commented that activation and response in this type of incident function not only as a service to their community but also help to solidify trained skills and for getting ready for even bigger disasters.

Thank you to all the volunteers helping to keep our community safe!
