Parking Information Summary for

University of California affiliates

Welcome new and returning Cal students.  There are many convenient and inexpensive ways to attend UC Berkeley without needing to own car. For information on alternative transportations programs, please check the City's Commuter Programs page or the University's Transportation Alternatives program.

If you do use a car, please review this page for information on the many ways parking operates on City of Berkeley streets. This page contains a brief summary of parking programs, enforcement hours, the citation appeal process, and permit programs.

 Residential Parking Permits (RPP)

There are 14 Residential Parking Permit (RPP) areas.  These areas are limited to two (2) hour parking unless a residential parking permit is properly displayed on the vehicle.  These zones are enforced Monday through Friday with Zones A, B, and E also enforced on Saturdays.  If you see signs in your neighborhood displaying any letter of A to N, you live in a Residential Parking Permit area and will need a residential parking permit to park longer than two hours on the street.  There are two categories of permits, “Permanent” and “Visitor.”  For more information about eligibility and registration for an RPP permit, contact the Customer Service Center at (510) 981-7200 or visit www.cityofberkeley.info/finance/residentialparking.html.

Parking on Holidays

Parking, at meters or in RPP zones, is not enforced on certain holidays. Please visit the City’s website at www.cityof berkeleyinfo.com for specific holidays and exceptions.

Duncan Eagle MeterSingle Space and Multi-Space Meters

The City uses single-space and multi-space meters throughout the City.  Meters are enforced Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM unless otherwise posted.   The toll free meter information hotline is: 1-877-METER-411

Broken Meters – Time Limit Enforced

If you park at an inoperable meter space, please be aware that all meter time zones, whether the meter is operating correctly or not, is still restricted to the time posted.  You may receive more than one citation for overstaying your time limit.  Please be aware that this applies to all time-zoned parking in the City of Berkeley, not just at parking meters.

JAMMING OR VANDALIZING METERS IS A MISDEMEANOR AND COULD RESULT IN A FINE UP TO $1,000 AND SIX MONTHS IN JAIL.

Electronic Debit Cards Can Be Used in single space Parking Meters and are available for purchase at 2020 Center Street.

Parking Tickets

You can pay parking tickets in person at the Customer Service Center, by telephone, Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. by calling (510) 981-7200 or you can now pay easily and securely online.

If you are issued a parking ticket that you believe is incorrect, you can contest it, but it must be within 21 calendar days after issuance; otherwise you waive your appeal rights.  For more information about this administrative review process, please call the Finance Customer Service Center.

Hearings

If your citation is not dismissed after receiving an administrative review you may then request a formal hearing. An administrative hearing must be requested within 21 calendar days of your administrative review notice or the penalty will be increased and you will not have another opportunity to be heard.

Drop-in hearings are held Mondays or Wednesdays between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., or between 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the Customer Service Center, 2020 Center Street. Hearings by appointment only are held on Tuesdays between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., or Thursdays between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Call (510) 231-4190 (between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.) to schedule an appointment.

Community Service.

The City of Berkeley offers Community Service in lieu of cash payment for citations. Contact the Finance Customer Service Center on Wednesdays between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm, or from 1:30 to 4:30 pm to sign up.  Administrative and program fees are required.  Fees are set by Berkeley Community Service Works.
