Environmental Impacts of
Transportation
In 1990, transportation
counted for 45% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the
City of Berkeley. Surprisingly, the type of automotive travel that
generated the greatest amount of emissions is not the daily commute to
work, but the short, non-commute trips.
Each gallon of gasoline
burned creates 20 lbs of CO2 emissions. Find out what your
vehicle uses.
There are many ways to
reduce the environmental impacts of transportation:
Trip
Reduction
-
Combine
your errands to make fewer trips; also, warmed-up engines pollute less
than cold ones.
-
Neighborhood
carpools for school events will reduce the number of vehicles on the
road during commute hours.
-
Use
a fuel efficient vehicle.
-
Keep
your vehicle in good repair; a well-tuned vehicle will produce fewer
pollutants.
-
Carpool
to events such as movies and concerts.
Public
and Alternative Transit

-
Public
transportation connects neighborhoods in Berkeley to shopping,
schools, theaters and parks.
-
Bicycles
are a healthy alternative to vehicles, and produce no emissions in
their use. Also, it is far easier to park a bicycle than an
automobile.
-
Walk!
It is a great way to meet your neighbors, and is a safe and healthy
form of exercise for nearly everyone.
Electric
Vehicles
-
New
electric vehicles have a range of up to 100 miles, and a top speed of
approximately 80 mph.
-
Recharging
times range from 4 to 8 hours.
-
Mileage
is approximately 2-3 miles/kWh, and electric vehicles are cheaper to
operate on a per-mile basis.
-
Recharging
stations are located throughout the state as you travel; you can also
use your household current for recharging at home.
