RED LIGHT CAMERA PROGRAM

WHAT? Red light camera system

It is a state-of-the-art digital detection system installed at intersections for the purpose of discouraging drivers from running through red lights.  The Red Light Enforcement System monitors vehicle movements into an intersection and the corresponding traffic signal indications.  The system is able to instantly detect and record red light violations, and operates 24 hours a day.

WHY? To improve public safety

Federal data shows red light running crashes are the most dangerous of all crashes for urban drivers.

Automated red light camera programs allow continuous, objective enforcement and leave Police Officers free for other community protection duties.  Where cameras are installed, they have been shown to cut the risk of injury crashes by one third. * There are spillover safety improvements at nearby intersections also.

*Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, Status Report, Vol 37, 2002

WHERE? At identified high-risk intersections

Camera sites have been selected on the basis of traffic data and collision records.

Eastbound and Westbound on University Avenue at Sixth Street.
Northbound and Southbound on Shattuck Avenue at University Avenue.

HOW? By recording images and data for vehicles that 'run' on red

The City has a contract with Nestor Traffic Systems, a specialist photo enforcement services provider, to operate the Program technologies.

Under California Vehicle Code Section 21453 (a) or 21453 (c), the registered owners of vehicles that have been recorded running the red light signal will receive Notices of Violation for  a minimum of $331.00.

Notices will be issued only after Police Officers have approved the recorded images and data.  More information is provided on Camera System Operations.
