Bicycling in Berkeley

Bicycles are an important mode of transportation in Berkeley. About 5% of employed Berkeley residents commute by bicycle, almost 4 times the Alameda County average and nearly 5 times the Bay Area average.

Berkeley is also a very safe place to bike and walk.  When indexed by its high rates of walking and cycling, Berkeley ranks as the safest city with a population over 60,000 in California for both walking and biking.

The City's Bicycle Plan was adopted in 2000 and guides the development of bicycle facilities and bicycle education and safety programs.
