Sustainable Berkeley

Sustainable Community Inventory:
Moving Towards
Sustainability

The Sustainable Community Inventory was undertaken for the City of Berkeley to establish a profile of the City's social, economic and environmental resources and to describe current management practices developed to maintain or enhance those resources.  The findings:

  • Provide a snapshot view of the City's resources

  • Describe positive strides being made towards sustainability,

  • Highlight potential barriers to further advancement

  • Form the basis for identifying opportunities for advancing closer to sustainability.

Report Authors and Sponsorship

The Inventory was financially sponsored and coordinated by the Alameda County Waste Management Authority and Source Reduction and Recycling Board (Agency) in an effort to assist cities within Alameda County to identify opportunities for advancing towards sustainability.  The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) developed the Sustainability Inventory as a tool for local governments interested in systematically developing policies and programs which promote ecological health, economic vitality and social equity.  ICLEI compiled the data and prepared this report with the assistance of the City of Berkeley and the Agency. Over forty-five City of Berkeley and regional agency staff provided information for this report; details are included in Acknowledgements.
