Berkeley Community Sustainability Goals

Green Building: Berkeley City Council adopts the Green Building Initiative to promote green building practices as the "business as usual" choice for new construction and remodel projects in Berkeley". Council Resolution No. 61,266 Sept 9, 2001

Greenhouse Gas Reduction Goals

The City has established short and long-term goals for community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions.  The emission  sources include motor fuels, natural gas and electricity.

  • A 15% reduction in community-wide emissions by 2010 from 1990 baseline (see the CO2 Reduction Plan)
  • A long-term goal of achieving climate change neutrality (no net emissions).

In terms of emissions from City sources (the municipal fleet and facilities), the City resolves to strive to reduce its overall production of GHGs to a "net-zero" level. The City is considering participation in the Chicago Climate Exchange, which would contractually obligate the City to reduce emissions from all sources by 1% per year.

The City seeks to make its Greenhouse Gas reduction efforts visible to the community, to encourage others to join us.  For example:

  • The City endorsed the Kyoto Protocol, which calls for a 7% reduction in national GHG emissions by 2012 from 1990 baseline.

  • The City is considering taking the California Flex Your Power Pledge, which establishes a goal of reducing emissions from natural gas and electricity generation sources by 20% by 2015.
