The United States represents 4% of the world’s population, yet consumes 25% of the world’s non-renewable energy, including oil, natural gas and coal.  Demands on freshwater have increased dramatically this century as well.  There is now less than half the amount of available fresh water per person worldwide than was available in 1960.

The world population is currently 6.4 billion, compared to 2.7 billion in 1950.  It is projected to reach 9 billion by 2050.

The planet simply cannot continue to sustain our level of consumption without leaving much of the world’s population without access to their basic needs.  In essence, we are borrowing our current lifestyle from the developing world and Americans in the not-so-distant future.

The good news is that there is a lot we can each do to slow consumption of life-supporting resources while still enabling the economy to grow.
