Berkeley Sustainable-Businesses


leaf graphicBerkeley Sustainable-Businesses provide goods or services that improve environmental performance or operate in ways that conserve resources or prevent pollution.  

Sustainable-Businesses are in compliance with Berkeley environmental regulations and the “eco-efficient” firms have participated in third party certification or audit programs.

Explanation of Qualifications
The City of Berkeley’s Sustainable Development Initiative maintains a list of Sustainable Businesses. All Berkeley Sustainable Businesses must be in compliance with Berkeley’s environmental regulations, and inclusion on the list is based on the following qualifications:

1. Berkeley businesses that achieve third-party certification: Organizations that are certified by independent third parties as using sustainable materials or practices.  Examples include 

Bay Area Green Business Certified - a program which certifies companies based on their superior environmental performance, across four environmental media.  View a list of Berkeley Certified Green Businesses.

California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) for food producers and purveyors

Forestry Stewardship Council Certified 

ISO 14001 certified environmental management system

NARI Certified Building Professionals - a program of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry which trains and tests remodeling professionals on Green Building standards.

LEED Accredited Professional Services  

2. Berkeley businesses that provide an environmental service or manufacture, design or develop environmental products. 

3. Environmental Leaders.  Berkeley businesses that formally adopt sustainable policies, practices and strategies as demonstrated by:

  • Formal adoption of written policy and goal of sustainable development.
  • Adoption of a detailed written strategy for moving toward their definition of sustainability.
  • Utilize one of the following systems or set of principles for implementing their sustainable development strategy: CERES Principles, Natural Step Principles, Zeri Principles, Cradle to Cradle Principles and others.
