Residents

Ways to save energy, money, and the planet

Berkeley is home to some of the most energy- and environmentally-conscious residents in the United States.   A 2002 study done showed that the majority of Berkeley's 44,000 households use an average of 200 kilowatt hours (~$30) a month year round.  In summer, ~17% of all households use about 120 kWh per month (~$18).  Almost 7% use 50 kWh or less each month.

Berkeley residents are also mindful of energy used in transportation.  Sixty-eight percent of the people who live and work in Berkeley commute using an alternative transportation mode year round, such as bicycles, walking and public transportation.  And of those who do drive, only 36% drive alone, as compared to the Bay Area average of 66.9%. (See Transportation Demand Study)
