Energy & Sustainable Development was formed by a merger of the Energy Office, and the Sustainable Development Initiative of the Office of Economic Development to better coordinate functions.

Since the 1980s, the work of the two units has increased Berkeley's resource efficiency, reduced pollution, stimulated green building and green buying, and saved money for local businesses, residents and taxpayers.

Berkeley's Civic Center - A Green Building.
|Berkeley's Civic Center at 2180 Milvia was renovated to increase energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

Our Successes include:

  • Initiating sustainable development through City action plans, such as the Green Building Initiative;

  • Promoting sustainable-businesses through specialized business assistance, websites and marketing;

  • Incubating green building and development service programs, including Ask An Expert , which provided green building information to over 100 local businesses, contractors and homeowners in 2003-4.

  • Renewable energy projects, including the West Campus Swim Center's solar hot water system and the Berkeley Corporation Yard's solar electric system.
