Meals on Wheels 2939 Ellis St.
What is "Meals on Wheels?" Meals on Wheels has been providing home-delivered meals to Berkeley, Albany, and Emeryville homebound seniors for more than 35 years. Who is eligible? Homebound seniors (60 years of age or older) unable to prepare a balanced meal themselves or who have no one available to prepare a meal for them. How can I receive a meal? If you are interested in participating in this program please call the Meals on Wheels Office at (510) 981-5250 (after noon) to arrange for meal service. An initial assessment will be scheduled to determine your eligibility. Senior service assistants at the Senior Centers, hospital social workers, case managers, and doctors also make referrals. Who delivers the meals? Meals are delivered right to your front door by friendly Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers from our caterer, Project Open Hand between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. These dedicated drivers make many stops, so their visits must be quick in order for everyone to receive a hot meal. How do I cancel a meal? Please call the Meals on Wheels office at (510) 981-5250 before 9:30 a.m. on the day you need to cancel your meal. We cannot leave a meal if you are not home, and an absence without notice causes concern. How long can I participate? The Meals on Wheels program is intended to offer support if you are unable to provide good nutrition for yourself. Meals are typically delivered for short periods of time during an illness or while recuperating after a hospital stay. Occasionally our services are used for longer periods. Periodic calls and home visits will be made to determine your continued eligibility or need. Once you are able to get out of the house, we encourage you to participate in a meal program at one of our conveniently located senior centers. How is Meals on Wheels funded? The Meals on Wheels Program is funded by the Alameda County Area Agency on Aging, the City of Berkeley, private grants and customer donations. How much should I contribute? We suggest a contribution ($3.50 per meal) based upon your monthly income, to help us cover the costs of the program. The Meals on Wheels program relies on client contributions for 20% of our operating expenses. Although this program is heavily dependent on contributions, if you are unable to make a contribution, service will not be denied. At the beginning of each month you will receive a statement for the previous month's meals. We encourage you to donate by check in a sealed envelope. Please mail contributions to:
Please make checks payable to "City of Berkeley/Project Open Hand". What does the meal contain? Meals on Wheels are tasty hot meals that are well balanced, low in fat, with no added salt.
