Welcome to the Aging Services Division at the City of Berkeley, CA. We are part of the Housing and Community Services Department.
The city of Berkeley’s Aging Services Division is dedicated to promoting a dignified, healthful quality of life for older adults by advocating for vital services, providing opportunities to develop meaningful fellowship, offering lifelong learning activities, recognizing the continued and varied accomplishments of older adults, and being an accessible and trusted community resource.
Activities and Services - Activities and Services
The Division on Aging offers a variety of free classes, seminars, and social events for adults 55 years of age and older (60 years and older for the lunch program). Currently, more than 1,200 seniors participate in activities held daily at three distinctive neighborhood Centers or in our home-delivered meal program. Our programs attract seniors with diverse backgrounds and interests who frequent the Centers for cultural exchange, meeting with friends, and enjoying delicious noon-time meals. Computer Classes for Seniors - Computer Classes for Seniors
The Division on Aging is excited to offer computer classes to seniors. Classes are offered in basic instruction, keyboarding, Microsoft Word, Windows, Excel, and Internet Access. The cost for the classes is $15.00 per semester. Classes at the South Berkeley and West Berkeley Senior Centers are conducted by Berkeley Adult School instructors Karen Berna-Hicks, Shawn Usha, and Naomi Quinones. Mercy Brown Bag Program - Mercy Brown Bag Program
The Mercy Brown Bag Program, sponsored by the Mercy Retirement and Care Center, distributes a grocery bag of nutritional food to low-income seniors twice a month. Normally bags consist of ten to fifteen items per bag including: bread, fresh produce, assorted canned foods, and other items depending on availability. [more...]
North Berkeley Senior Center - North Berkeley Senior Center
The North Berkeley Senior Center is located at 1901 Hearst Avenue (at Martin Luther King Jr. Way) and is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. The center is wheelchair accessible and is also accessible by public transportation. AC Transit buses to ride to the center are the 79 and 51 lines. Senior Companion Caregiver and Injury Prevention Programs - Senior Companion Caregiver and Injury Prevention Programs
In addition to all the services the City of Berkeley provides at the three Senior Centers plus Meals on Wheels, the Division on Aging administers two additional services introduced in 2002 to broaden the City's outreach to its older citizens. One program, the Senior Companion Caregiver Program, acknowledges the growing trend of younger family members who often must take on the responsibilities of caring for older, ailing relatives and the difficulties that undertaking presents. The other program, The Senior Injury Prevention Program in conjunction with the Berkeley Fire Department, identifies elders who often live alone and have no one else to turn to when they become ill or injured. Tri-City Cafés - Tri-City Cafés
The Tri-City Cafés are conveniently located in our senior centers in Berkeley as well as centers in Albany, Emeryville, the Jewish Community Center of the East Bay (J.C.C.E.B.), and the Japanese American Services of the East Bay (J.A.S.E.B.). The Tri-City Cafés offer casual, reasonably-priced dining exclusively for the older adult. The meals served are nutritious, tasty meals that are low in fat and have no added salt. Each meal also has at least one vitamin C-rich course and three meals a week include a vitamin A-rich course. [more...]
