Be Fit Berkeley!

A Community-Wide Event to Lose Weight and Be Active

How does it work?

The program will run from October 1, 2007 to May 31, 2008.

Check in each week at a Be Fit Berkeley station to record what you've done. You will earn points by losing weight and/or exercising regularly. You will also be entered in a raffle twice a month for small prizes donated by local businesses.

Be Fit Berkeley is a friendly competition between City Council Districts. The people from the winning district will be entered into a raffle for the Grand Prize!

Special Thanks

The organizers of Be Fit Berkeley wish to thank our generous community partners who have underwritten portions of the program:

How did this program start?

The Berkeley City Council was inspired by the Public Health Division’s 2007 Health Status Report.  Together, the City Council and the Public Health Division have created Be Fit Berkeley!

Why is this important?

The Health Status Report highlighted the health disparities in Berkeley – and demonstrated the ways in which Berkeley residents can improve their health.

  • Physical inactivity and poor diet contribute to 43% of deaths in the City of Berkeley
  • 31% of Berkeley adults are considered overweight or obese
  • 17% of Berkeley adults and 40% of African-American Berkeley adults surveyed have high blood pressure

Get Ready, Get Set, Get Fit!
