Berkeley,
California (Tuesday, January 15, 2008) - “Heart
of the Matter,” an exhibition by Laney College students in Andrée
Singer Thompson’s EcoArt Matters class, can be seen
at Addison Street Windows Gallery from January 15 - February
23.
There
will be an sidewalk reception on Friday. January 18, from 5 p.m. to
8 p.m. The exhibition is free, open to the public and is wheelchair
accessible.
This
exhibition gives voice to environmental concerns. Thompson teaches
innovative methods of artistic expression to educate the viewer
about our environment. “It is imperative," says Thompson,
“that we all become better informed about the conditions that
threaten life on this planet and survival of the many species with
whom we co-exist.” This provocative and educational show helps do
just that.
These
art pieces were created in response to urgent environmental and
community issues. Among the many works exhibited are a mural
incorporating ceramic figures which addresses the problem of air
pollution in Oakland’s poorer communities; several pieces
addressing disappearing wildlife and habitat; a performance video
about the importance of recycling; a solar-powered bird habitat; an
innovative ceramic toilet seat designed to provide nitrogen for the
garden; and an exercise bicycle that powers lights.
All
the works are accompanied by research data and information about how
individuals can take responsibility for making our world a better
place.
The
Addison Street Windows Gallery is a project of the Civic Arts
Program of the City of Berkeley in cooperation with the Civic Arts
Commission. For information about the Windows Gallery please Mary
