OCTOBER FEAST!
North Berkeley Merchants Association Hosts
Festival on Sunday, October 24th
Berkeley, CA (Monday, October 18, 1999)
Berkeley's Shattuck Avenue
Gourmet Ghetto Invites You to Taste, See and Hear their Neighborhood at the October Feast
festival on Sunday, October 24, 1999, 11 am to 6 pm.
What: Berkeley's Shattuck
Avenue is considered the birthplace of the California Cuisine. The concept of fresh,
organic, farm food (Chez Panisse), freshly roasted coffee beans (Peet's), and imported
cheeses and freshly baked bread (The Cheese and Bread Board) all originated in the Gourmet
Ghetto. These, and other local stores, spawned a new awareness of fresh quality food that
has spread throughout the country. In addition, the Gourmet Ghetto has many non-food
merchants including art galleries and jewelry stores. Most stores will be open for this
one-day event that will also feature free music.
When: Sunday, October 24,
1999, 11 am to 6 pm.
Where: Shattuck Avenue Between Cedar and Vine
Tickets: Free
Event Highlights: While the Gourmet
Ghetto is one of Berkeley's most famous neighborhoods, this October Feast Festival marks
the first time that this neighborhood has had such a large-scale, free street event.
There will be two stages of music, one food demonstration stage, local merchant vendors,
outside food, beverage and artist booths, and an organic farmer's market and a pumpkin
patch .
The East Bay Express Music Stage will feature California Cajun Orchestra, West African
Highlife Band, the all woman salsa band Wild Mango, Brenda Boykin and Home Cookin's and
the Serpentine Exotic Belly Dancers.
