Berkeley, California (Tuesday, November 23, 1999)
This year's winter storms may indeed be more severe than those of previous winters.
Being prepared is always the best defense.
During the leafy fall season, foliage must be regularly removed from the streets to reduce
storm drain and catch basin debris. The City of Berkeley Public Works Department
is currently removing debris, inspecting creeks and storm drains, and
accelerating its storm drain maintenance program to repair facilities in low-lying areas
susceptible to flooding. If you know of a damaged catch basin or inlet, please contact
Berkeley Public Works.
The City also provides free sandbags for property
owners and residents during the storm season. For more information,
please call our Public Works
Customer Service Specialists at (510) 644-6620.
Here's what you can do to help reduce the risk of
damage to your home and neighborhood:
1. Adopt a catch basin. Look for
catch basins or storm drains nearest your property and remove leaves and debris.
2. Don't store material on the
streets or in along curbsides.
3. Don't park automobile wheels directly
against curbs.
4. Use sandbags as water barriers.
5. Clear your creek banks.
6. Rake, then compost or bag leaves.
7. Make sure sump pumps are working
properly.
8. Decrease indoor water use during
heavy rains.
9. Use less energy to prevent climate
change.
