Mayor
Bates Goes Solar
On December 16, 2004, at 9 a.m., Mayor Tom Bates made the switch to solar. After months of installing the necessary equipment, the Mayor 'flipped the switch' on his utility box to begin the process of powering his house through solar energy.

The
Mayor expects the initial investment of the time and equipment necessary
to set up the solar panels to pay for itself within a decade, with some
savings already realized. "As Mayor, one of my top priorities is to
build on Berkeley’s record of environmental leadership.
I thought it was time to put my money where my values are,” said
Mayor Bates. “It is my hope that others in Berkeley will join me in
taking steps like these to reduce energy use and protect our
environment.” |
