SUPPORTING OUR YOUTH

April 20 Teen Violence Prevention Forum

Apirl 20 Teen Violence Prevention Forum

In response to the recent number of serious incidents involving teens, the City and the Berkeley Unified School District have teamed up to work with the community on the problem.

Community input is a crucial part of the solution.

On April 20, 2006, Mayor Tom Bates and School Board President Terry Doran hosted officials from the Berkeley Unified School District, Berkeley Police Department, and Children's Hospital among other organizations, as part of a community forum on the prevention of teen violence. Most importantly, members of Berkeley's teen community provided invaluable insight into the problem and offered ideas for real solutions.

"Disputes that used to result in a couple of bruises and bruised egos are increasingly ending up in serious violence,” said Mayor Tom Bates.  “This problem is certainly not unique to Berkeley, but I think we can take concrete steps to bring our community together, talk with young people and families, and provide resources to help prevent these sorts of problems.”

"It is our job to do everything possible to ensure the safety of all of our students, whether they on a school campus or elsewhere in the community,” said Board President Doran.  “This forum is just our first new step in helping parents, students, and educators play essential roles in making this a safer community for all of us.”

The forum was attended by a number of teens and their parents looking for ways to make the City safer. Many youth in attendance spoke of their experiences and gave ideas for prevention. The event was covered by the press, including Berkeley's cable television station which plans to rebroadcast the event at a later date.

The April 20th forum, which will be taped for broadcast on Berkeley’s cable television station, will include a briefing from the Director of Adolescent Health at Children’s Hospital, a “reality check” and update on youth safety issues from the Berkeley Police Department, comments from student leaders, and a lot of time for discussion.
