Berkeley Youth
and Education Summit Check in on our progress:
165 Community Leaders Gather to Support Berkeley's Youth On March 29, 2003 165 people crowded into the Berkeley Alternative High School auditorium for the Youth and Education Summit Kick-Off. Leaders from Berkeley's youth and education programs, elected officials, city and school district administrators, teachers, and parents heard brief presentations on the status of state and local funding from Mayor Bates, School Board President Joaquin Rivera, Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, Superintendent Michele Lawrence, and City Manager Weldon Rucker. A concise presentation followed by Julie Sinai, senior aide to the mayor, on the demographics of Berkeley's youth. The next step was to get to work. The audience divided into six Action Teams: Youth Safety, After School Programming, Mentoring and Tutoring, Coordinated Family Support Services, Linking Public Library with School Libraries and Future Topics. The Action Teams represented areas
where we believe we can have the greatest impact by forging partnerships
between the city, the district, and the community. The notes from each
Action Team and demographic data can be viewed by clicking on the
