BATES HOLDS JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE TO Click Here To Read the Article from the Oakland Tribune Berkeley, CA – Mayor Tom Bates today joined California Department of Conservation Director Darryl Young to announce the release of official Seismic Hazard Zone maps for Berkeley and seven other East Bay Cities. At the press conference, held in Berkeley’s City Hall Chambers, state and local officials displayed maps showing areas at high risk for liquefaction or landslide in the event of an earthquake. Much of the Berkeley hills and the waterfront areas are noted as risk zones. Official maps and other information can be viewed on the Internet at http://gmw.consrv.ca.gov/shmp. The maps are useful for city planners, homeowners, and others in helping to indicate where extra seismic strengthening and other measures may be needed to protect buildings. “We live in an earthquake prone area by choice, so it’s up to all of us to ‘work with our faults’ and think about what we can do to prepare ourselves,” said Mayor Bates. “These maps will allow us to build more intelligently and, ultimately, to protect lives and property when an earthquake strikes.” He added that he planned to go home and restock his earthquake kit to make sure he had a three-day supply of water, working flashlights, and food. For
Berkeley, this is just another step in our ongoing effort to improve
community safety. Our efforts
began years ago under the umbrella of the Federal Emergency Management
Agency's “Project Impact” program launched by President Clinton.
This program partnered cities, the state, and the federal
government to tackle projects that would have been far too big for any
single city. # # #
