Annual UC Berkeley School of Public Health Volunteer Day

Bates and Dean Stephen Shortell, of the UC Berkeley School of Public
Health to host 3rd annual Volunteer Mobilization Day on Friday.
Students will work with child care centers, homeless services, and
seniors. Berkeley,
CA – At 8:30 a.m. on
Friday, August 24th Mayor Tom Bates, UC Berkeley School of
Public Health Dean Stephen Shortell will co-host the 3rd Annual
School of Public Health Volunteer Mobilization Day for up to 100 incoming
graduate students. “This
is a wonderful way to introduce new public health graduate students to the
Berkeley community immediately upon their arrival,” said Mayor Bates. “This volunteer day provides a great help to our local
service providers as well as giving students an opportunity to put their
commitment to public health to work on day one.” “This is one of the most important welcome week events because it provides an opportunity for our new students to be directly involved in their community,” said School of Public Health Dean Stephen Shortell. “It reminds them that Public Health is about solving problems that improve people's lives.” The Volunteer Mobilization Day
will begin with a kick-off event at 8:30 a.m. on the Pat Brown Patio in
front of Warren Hall with a welcome by Mayor Bates and Public Health Dean
Stephen Shortell. Organized
teams of volunteers will then be deployed to pre-approved sites to perform
community service until 12:30 p.m.
They will then return to campus by 1:00 for a lunch and reflection
with their teams. Volunteer sites include Bahia
School-Age Program, City of Berkeley North Berkeley Senior Center, Malcolm
X School Garden, Berkeley Youth Alternative, Peoples Park, Fred Finch
Youth Center’s Homeless Youth Center, and City of Berkeley Neighborhood
