3rd Annual UC Berkeley School of Public Health Volunteer Day

Mayor Tom Bates and Dean Stephen Shortell, of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health to host 3rd annual Volunteer Mobilization Day on Friday.  Students will work with child care centers, homeless services, and seniors.

Berkeley, CA – At 8:30 a.m. on Friday, August 24th Mayor Tom Bates, UC Berkeley School of Public Health Dean Stephen Shortell will co-host the 3rd Annual School of Public Health Volunteer Mobilization Day for up to 100 incoming graduate students.

“This is a wonderful way to introduce new public health graduate students to the Berkeley community immediately upon their arrival,” said Mayor Bates.  “This volunteer day provides a great help to our local service providers as well as giving students an opportunity to put their commitment to public health to work on day one.”

“This is one of the most important welcome week events because it provides an opportunity for our new students to be directly involved in their community,” said School of Public Health Dean Stephen Shortell.  “It reminds them that Public Health is about solving problems that improve people's lives.”

The Volunteer Mobilization Day will begin with a kick-off event at 8:30 a.m. on the Pat Brown Patio in front of Warren Hall with a welcome by Mayor Bates and Public Health Dean Stephen Shortell.  Organized teams of volunteers will then be deployed to pre-approved sites to perform community service until 12:30 p.m.   They will then return to campus by 1:00 for a lunch and reflection with their teams.

Volunteer sites include Bahia School-Age Program, City of Berkeley North Berkeley Senior Center, Malcolm X School Garden, Berkeley Youth Alternative, Peoples Park, Fred Finch Youth Center’s Homeless Youth Center, and City of Berkeley Neighborhood Services.
