Youth
to Lead Community Walk to Combat Violence in Southwest Berkeley
Berkeley,
CA On Wednesday evening, Berkeley
youth will join community members, City staff, Berkeley Police, and others
to walk through Southwest Berkeley in an effort to help stop the violence
and build meaningful relationships in their community.
The walk follows eight recent shootings in the area, none of which
were fatal. The event
is being organized by Berkeley teens from Berkeley Organizing
Congregations for Action (BOCA) and Berkeley United Youth in Action (BUYA)
in partnership with the Office of Mayor Tom Bates, City Neighborhood
Services, Berkeley Police Department, and Council Members Darryl Moore and
Max Anderson. We
need to engage everyone in our efforts to create safe neighborhoods,
said Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates. I
am encouraged that this group of young people has taken the initiative to
continue the dialogue and community building necessary to end the
violence. The community walk is to bring people of all ages and different backgrounds together to build a better community. said Jose Franco, BUYA youth. What:
