Mayor Bates Looking for New Housing Authority Commissioners

Mayor Bates to appoint new, fully independent Housing Authority Board as part of major reorganization.  Applications for Commissioners due by March 30th.

Berkeley, CA – In an effort to right the ship at the Berkeley Housing Authority, the City has created a new, fully independent Housing Authority Board of Commissioners to oversee the agency.  This new Board, which will take over the reigns in July of this year, is to be appointed by Mayor Tom Bates.

Mayor Bates is asking for anyone interested in the position to submit an application to his office by Friday, March 30th.  In all, the Mayor will appoint seven commissioners, including at least two tenants.  All appointments must then be confirmed by the City Council.

The new Berkeley Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will be the independent body responsible for carrying out the Housing Assistance Voucher (Section 8) and Public Housing Programs for low income Berkeley residents. Commissioners will determine how the Berkeley Housing Authority is staffed, oversee the budget, and provide oversight to ensure its programs are operated in accordance with federal guidelines.

“Berkeley is one of the most expensive cities in the country and we need a strong Housing Authority to ensure we are managing our limited supply of affordable housing as effectively as possible,” said Mayor Bates.  “I am asking for the wonderfully talented people of this City to step forward to help lead this important agency.”

To be eligible, applicants must live in Berkeley and have a demonstrated interest in housing for low-income people.  If interested, applicants should send a cover letter and resume to the Mayor’s office by email to mayor@ci.berkeley.ca.us or by U.S. mail to 2180 Milvia Street, 5th Floor, Berkeley, CA 94704.  More information is available on the Mayor’s website.  www.cityofberkeley.info/mayor.
