IMMEDIATE RELEASE Mayor
Bates Appointed to Metropolitan Transportation Commission Alameda
County Conference of Mayors unanimously appointed Mayor Bates to the MTC.
His term will begin in February. Berkeley, CA – Mayor Tom Bates
was unanimously appointed to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC)
by the Alameda County Conference of Mayors at their December 13th
meeting. Mayor Bates will
represent Alameda County cities beginning in February. The Metropolitan Transportation
Commission (MTC) is the transportation planning, coordinating and
financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
In addition to coordination and oversight, the MTC allocates over
$1 billion every year in funding to mass transit, local streets and roads,
highways, freight facilities, and bicycle and pedestrian routes in the
region. “The MTC serves as the lead
regional body on nearly every major transportation issue,” said Mayor
Tom Bates. “I am
particularly looking forward to helping shape the future of our region’s
public transportation system as we work to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions.” Mayor Bates also serves on several
other regional boards and commissions, including the Bay Conservation
Development Commission (BCDC), the Bay Area Air Quality Management
District (BAAQMD), and the Alameda County Transportation Improvement
Authority (ACTIA). #
