Hundreds to Volunteer Throughout East Bay in Joint Community and UC Berkeley Event
On Saturday morning, Mayor Tom Bates will kick-off huge volunteer mobilization with rally on Milvia Street in front of the City of Berkeley Civic Center Building.

Berkeley, CA – As many as 400 UC Berkeley students and local community members are expected to spend the day volunteering in Berkeley and around the East Bay on Saturday as part of ‘Cal Community Action Day’ and ‘Hands on Bay Area Day.’  Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates will welcome the volunteers at an 8:30 a.m. kick-off event in front of Berkeley’s Civic Center Building on Milvia Street.

Following the kick-off, volunteers will work on projects at Berkeley’s Aquatic Park, Malcolm X School, People’s Park, the Youth Emergency Hostel, and 10 other Berkeley locations.  The Cal Community in Action Day is organized by the Cal Corps Public Service Center and Hands on East Bay, with assistance from the Mayor’s Office.  This event is part of a larger Bay Area-wide community mobilization day that will deploy over 2,000 volunteers to 65 sites.  For more information, go to www.handsonbayarea.org.

“Over 10,000 Cal students volunteer in our community every year, helping with everything from legal services for homeless people to environmental restoration work,” said Mayor Tom Bates.  “This one day event will provide thousands of hours of free work to many worthy organizations and projects.  Even more importantly, we know from experience that many participants will decide to make volunteer work a regular part of their lives.”
