IMMEDIATE RELEASE BERKELEY
PARTICIPATES IN 4TH ANNUAL NATIONAL ‘LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL’
On Thursday, October 12th,
after school programs across the city will open to the public to
showcase their recreation, enrichment and academic activities.
Berkeley, CA – Berkeley
Mayor Tom Bates will join in a community-wide open house recognizing the
importance of afterschool programs on October 12th with the 4th
annual Lights On Afterschool! event. Lights On Afterschool
highlights three significant contributions that after school programs make
to Berkeley: keeping kids safe and healthy, helping them learn, and
relieving working parents of worries about their children's activities
during the afternoon hours. Lights on Afterschool encourages families, neighbors,
local business people to visit the afterschool programs near their home
and school to become aware of the opportunities that are offered for
Berkeley’s children and youth. Support
for afterschool programs in Berkeley is strong.
Annually, the City of Berkeley and BUSD provide over $4 million in
funding to city-run, school-operated and community based afterschool
programs. Mayor Bates has
made city support for after school programs a top priority for his
administration. “Our children are
facing challenging times and quality afterschool programs help provide the
mentoring, support and safety they need,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “It is
critical that our City, school district and community continue to support
afterschool programs and expand opportunities for teens in the after
school hours.” This is the 4th annual Lights On Afterschool organized by Berkeley’s after school providers. This group has been working together since the 2003 Mayor’s Summit on Youth and Education and it represents public and private extended day programs including the City of Berkeley, the Berkeley Unified School District L.E.A.R.N., and Bahia School-age Program.
