FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dedication
of Eastshore State Park Berkeley, CA –
On Wednesday, October 4th, the East Bay Regional Park
District and the California Department of Parks and Recreation will
dedicate Eastshore State Park and celebrate the Berkeley Meadow
restoration. Mayor Tom Bates will join park officials, other local mayors,
Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, East Bay Regional Park District Board Member
Nancy Skinner, Save the Bay co-founder Sylvia McLaughlin, and hundreds of
others. This
restoration marks the very first project to be completed from the
Eastshore State Park General Plan. The plan was adopted in 2002 after 25
years of citizen activism and includes a combination of preservation,
conservation, and recreation along the Bay.
Mayor Tom Bates played a key role in the creation of the Park,
including writing the legislation that created it while a member of the
State Assembly. “This amazing park has been a labor of love for many of us over the past three decades. Eastshore Park will forever protect over eight miles of our shoreline, provide recreation opportunities, connect the Bay Trail, and provide habitat for birds and animals,” said Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, who also serves as a Board Member for Citizens for Eastshore State Park. “Joining my friends and colleagues to celebrate the Park’s grand opening will be one of the highlights of my career in public service.” Eastshore State Park is considered a major achievement in open space protection. The 8.5-mile shoreline park includes over 2,000 acres of uplands and tidelands along the waterfronts of Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley, Albany, and Richmond. The park is a result of decades of citizen efforts to protect San Francisco Bay, restoring areas that were once used as landfill. At
Berkeley Meadow, the East Bay Regional Park District restored and enhanced
seasonal wetlands and improved coastal scrub and upland habitats as part
of a $1.3 million, 17-acre Phase I restoration project. Concurrent with
East Bay Regional Park District’s restoration work, State Parks
constructed $1.7 million of trails, fencing, and interpretive exhibits,
creating walking trails through the Berkeley Meadow. Two additional phases
are in the planning stages. EVENT
