Public Health Graduate Students to Spend Day Volunteering in Berkeley
Mayor Tom
Bates and UC Berkeley School of Public Health to host 2nd
annual Volunteer Mobilization Day on Friday.
Students will work with child care centers, homeless services, and
seniors. Berkeley,
CA – At 8:45 a.m. on
Friday, August 25th Mayor Tom Bates, Berkeley Champions for
Kids, and the UC Berkeley School of Public Health will co-host the 2nd
Annual School of Public Health Volunteer Mobilization Day for up to 100
incoming graduate students. “By
introducing the new public health graduate students to Berkeley
immediately upon their arrival, we hope that they will find a wonderful
and engaging community that extends beyond the walls of the university,”
said Mayor Bates. “This is one of the most important welcome week events because it provides an opportunity for our new students to be directly involved in their community,” said School of Public Health Dean Stephen Shortell. “It also reminds them all that their time in graduate school is not just about writing papers and attending lecture – it is about helping people.” The Volunteer Mobilization Day
will begin with a kick-off event at 8:45 a.m. on the lawn in front of
Warren Hall with a welcome by Mayor Bates and Public Health Acting Dean
Ray Catalano. Organized teams of volunteers will then be deployed to
