FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 17, 2006

Second Annual Berkeley Reads Together – Mayor Bates and Berkeley Library to Hand Out Free Books at Senior Centers

2nd Annual Berkeley Reads Together: California Stories
event at the West Berkeley Senior Center on Tuesday, July 18th. Distribution of free copies of Funny in Farsi to Berkeley seniors.

Berkeley, CA – On Tuesday, July 18th Mayor Tom Bates and Berkeley Public Library Berkeley Reads coordinator, Linda Sakamoto-Jahnke, will launch Berkeley Reads Together: California Stories with the distribution of hundreds of free books to South and West Berkeley residents.  Berkeley Reads Together is a wonderful opportunity to build community and promote literacy throughout the City by encouraging all Berkeleyans to read the same book at the same time and then discuss it with their families, friends and neighbors.

This year Mayor Bates and the Berkeley Public Library have selected Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas.  In 1972, when she was seven, Ms. Dumas and her family moved from Iran to Southern California, arriving with no firsthand knowledge of this country beyond her father’s glowing memories of his graduate school years here. More family soon followed, and the clan has been here ever since.  Funny in Farsi chronicles the American journey of Dumas’s wonderfully engaging family.

“Last year, we distributed over 600 books and started a wonderful community tradition.  In fact, reading circles started up around town after we launched the program,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “This year’s book is both a wonderful piece of literature and a very creative look at the issue of immigration.  I look forward to the many great discussions it will start.”

Free copies of Funny in Farsi will be available at the City of Berkeley Senior Centers and all Berkeley Public Library branches thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library.  Families with children participating in Project BUILD (Berkeley United in Literacy Development) will also receive a free book.
