to Host 10th Annual Student Awards – 185 High School Students
to be Honored

Bates to continue tradition of recognizing high school students with May
22nd event at the DoubleTree Hotel Berkeley Marina. Berkeley, CA – Continuing a Berkeley tradition, Mayor Tom Bates will present “Mayor’s 10th Annual Student Recognition Awards” to Berkeley public school students at a ceremony on Monday 22nd, 2006. With Berkeley City Council Members, Berkeley Unified School District Officials, parents, and teachers joining him, Mayor Bates will present 185 Berkeley High School and Berkeley Alternative High School students with awards. The students were nominated by their teachers in one of seven categories – citizenship, leadership, sports, extraordinary effort, arts, communications, and community service. “I am proud to continue the tradition of honoring Berkeley students for their leadership, citizenship, and perseverance,” said Mayor Bates. “Every one of these students has impressed a teacher with their determination and effort and I look forward to giving them the recognition they deserve.” Debra
Pryor, the first woman and first African-American to serve as Berkeley’s
fire chief, will give the keynote address.
The Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble will provide entertainment. WHAT:
