Mayor Bates Proclaims ‘Wavy Gravy Week’ in Honor of Wavy’s 70th Birthday

Wavy Gravy, the “activist clown and former frozen dessert” will be honored during his 70th birthday bash and fundraiser for the Seva Foundation.

Berkeley, CA –  Wavy Gravy, the Berkeley hero sometimes referred to as “the illegitimate son of Harpo Marx and Mother Teresa,” will celebrate his 70th birthday with a blow-out celebration to raise money for his Seva Foundation at the Berkeley Community Theater on Saturday, May 20th.  (His actual birthday falls on Monday, May 15th.)

In honor of Wavy’s birthday, Mayor Tom Bates is naming the week of May 14th to the 20th as “Wavy Gravy Week” in the City of Berkeley.  The proclamation is in honor of his incredible contribution to the Berkeley community and the world through his work with the Seva Foundation, Camp Winnarainbow, and many other worthy causes.

“Wavy embodies the very spirit of Berkeley.  He’s caring, funny, offbeat, and absolutely dedicated to making the world a better place,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “Naming a single day after Wavy was nowhere near sufficient, so we are naming the entire week after him.”

Mayor Bates plans to officially proclaim Wavy Week during the May 20th event.  Performing in honor of Wavy’s birthday are Bob Weir & Rat Dog, Mickey Hart & Friends, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, David Lindley and Linda Tillery.

More information on the Seva Foundation and the birthday bash are available at www.seva.org.  The full proclamation text follows.

IN HONOR OF WAVY GRAVY ON HIS 70TH BIRTHDAY

WHEREAS, Wavy Gravy has been an advocate and symbol for positive social change and compassion since the 1960’s, when he introduced “jazz and poetry” to Greenwich Village as the poetry director of the Gaslight Café in New York City; and

WHEREAS,  Wavy Gravy is a member of the entertainment and activist commune “the Hog Farm” and has expanded his activities over the last three decades to include co-directorship of Camp Winnarainbow, a performing arts program for children, which takes place at Hog Farm every summer; and

WHEREAS, Wavy Gravy co-founded the Seva Foundation, which provides more than 80,000 eye surgeries a year in India, Nepal, and Tibet, establishes partnerships in Native American communities to tackle the rising epidemic of diabetes, supports work for sustainable agriculture in Mexico, and monitors violence against refugees of the Guatemalan civil war; and

WHEREAS, Wavy Gravy has been referred to “the illegitimate son of Harpo Marx and Mother Teresa,” “a saint in a clown suit,” and has been tasted by millions as a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor; and

WHEREAS, Wavy Gravy celebrates his 70th birthday on May 15, 2006, however naming a single day after Wavy Gravy is nowhere near sufficient.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Tom Bates, Mayor of the City of Berkeley, do hereby proclaim the week of May 14th to the 20th as

WAVY GRAVY WEEK

In honor of an “activist clown and a former frozen dessert” who is an invaluable part of our community.
