MEDIA ADVISORYMay 11, 2006 Mayor Bates Appointed to the Bay Area Air Quality Management
District Board Alameda
County Mayors Conference appoints Mayor Bates to serve on the region’s
air quality regulation board. Berkeley, CA
– The Alameda County Conference of Mayors unanimously voted to appoint
Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District
Board at it’s meeting last night. The
Air District is the region’s air quality regulatory agency and is
beginning a major effort to address greenhouse gas emissions. “I am looking forward to representing
Berkeley and all Alameda County cities on the Air District Board,” said
Mayor Tom Bates. “I view
this as an important opportunity to aggressively pursue efforts to improve
air quality and protect the health of the people in our community.
I also look forward to playing a role in the Air District’s new
effort to address greenhouse gas emissions.”
Mayor Bates, who just completed his term as President of the
Alameda County Conference of Mayors, has been leading an initiative of the
Conference to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the county.
Bates has been known as an environmental champion during his 20
years as a member of the State Assembly and three years as mayor.
The Air District has three major goals: to achieve high air quality
standards, provide information on how the public can make positive air
quality choices, and to develop and implement policies for environmental
justice. # # # |
