Mayor Bates to Join Newborns and Infants for Hearing Test at New Screening Facility

Mayor Bates will visit the new Pediatric Audiology Program at the Center for Early Intervention on Deafness on Monday, April 24th to have his hearing tested.

Berkeley, CA – Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, a hearing aid user for eight years, will be receiving a hearing screening to highlight the new Pediatric Audiology Program at the Center for Early Intervention on Deafness (CEID). The hearing test, which Mayor Bates will take along with newborns and infants, will help Mayor Bates determine if his hearing aids need updating or adjustment.

“Over the past 26 years, the Center for Early Intervention on Deafness has helped thousands of children and families in our community,” said Mayor Tom Bates.  “I am proud of the support the City of Berkeley has provided CEID over the years and look forward to giving their new facility a test drive.”

Deafness is the most common birth defect with 1 in 350 babies born each year with a significant permanent hearing loss – 1,200 in California, alone. CEID is one of only a few programs in the Bay Area that offers intensive education and support for young children under the age of five who are deaf, hard of hearing, and who have speech disorders.  CEID is unique in that its new Center offers comprehensive services and “one stop shopping,” including all day “inclusive” childcare, parent education classes, medical training, and now full service Audiology services - all on a single campus.

May is also “Better Hearing and Speech Month.”  The event will bring awareness to our community to reverse the trends that cause direct impact to an under served population of children – those who start kindergarten typically two years behind their hearing peers simply because they did not hear normally.  However, with early intervention and identification of hearing loss by 6 months of age, babies with hearing loss can develop near normal language skills by the time they are three years old.
