MEDIA ADVISORYApril 17, 2006 Out
of Control Parties, Youth Violence to be Subject of Community Forum Hosted
by Mayor Bates and School Board President Doran After two
recent homicides at youth parties, the city and school district are
inviting families to join in discussion about reducing violence on
Thursday, April 20th. Berkeley,
CA – In response to an increase in the number of serious youth violence
incidents, including two homicides at Berkeley parties, the City and the
Berkeley Unified School district are teaming up to work with the community
on the problem. On April 20th,
Mayor Tom Bates and School Board President Terry Doran are bringing
together the School District, the Berkeley Police Department, Children's
Hospital, and others to hold a community forum on the prevention of teen
violence. “Disputes
that used to result in a couple of bruises and bruised egos are
increasingly ending up in serious violence,” said Mayor Tom Bates.
“This problem is certainly not unique to Berkeley, but I think we
can take concrete steps to bring our community together, talk with young
people and families, and provide resources to help prevent these sorts of
problems.” “It
is our job to do everything possible to ensure the safety of all of our
students, whether they on a school campus or elsewhere in the
community,” said Board President Doran.
“This forum is just our first new step in helping parents,
students, and educators play essential roles in making this a safer
community for all of us.” The
April 20th forum, which will be taped for broadcast on
Berkeley’s cable television station, will include a briefing from the
Director of Adolescent Health at Children’s Hospital, a “reality
check” and update on youth safety issues from the Berkeley Police
Department, comments from student leaders, and a lot of time for
discussion. WHO:
