City of Berkeley Lights Civic Center
Building as Part of ‘Cities Against Death Penalty’ City
Council unanimously voted to join international observance against the
death penalty. Berkeley’s
Civic Center Building to be lit on the nights of November 28 – 20th. Berkeley, CA – Following a unanimous vote by the Berkeley City Council, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center Building will be illuminated by its outside flood lights the nights of November 28 – 30th as part of the international ‘Cities Against the Death Penalty’ commemoration. The City Council’s action came at the request of the Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission. Nearly 1,000 people have been executed in the United States since the death penalty was re-instated in 1977. Over 3,300 are currently on death row. For many years, the City Council has taken strong stands in opposition to the death penalty. The annual “Cities Against the Death Penalty” commemoration is organized by the Community of Sant'Egidio, an Italian group that has made efforts to abolish the death penalty one of their top priorities. Amnesty International, Penal Reform International and the French group Ensemble contre la peine de mort are also involved in the effort. For more information, view the
organization’s website at: www.santegidio.org/en/pdm/index.htm. # # # |
