Mayor
Bates and over 45 City and Community Members to Read Aloud at ‘Berkeley
Reads Together’ Event The
House on Mango Street to be read by Assemblywoman Hancock, Council
Members, business leaders, local pastors, and others at South Berkeley
Senior Center at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Berkeley,
CA – More than 45 community leaders will join in reading sections of The
House on Mango Street at a community reading event in Berkeley on
Saturday. The event is part
of the “Berkeley Reads Together” initiative launched in October with
Mayor Tom Bates and Library Director Jackie Griffin.
Berkeley
Reads Together is a program to encourage
all Berkeleyans to read the same book at the same time and then discuss it
with their families, friends and neighbors.
This year Mayor Bates and the Berkeley Public Library have selected
The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros. Consisting
of 44 short stories, The House on Mango Street is a powerful book
told by a young girl named Esperanza Cordero. Each chapter tells a
gripping story about the girl's childhood on Mango Street. Readers
at the community event include: Mayor Tom Bates, Assemblywoman Loni
Hancock, Council Member Darryl Moore, School Superintendent Michelle
Lawrence, President of the Chamber of Commerce Carolyn Henry Golphin, as
well as city staff, teachers, and many others. WHO:
