County Mayors to Vote on Regional Greenhouse Gas Reduction Effort Mayor Bates, San Leandro Mayor Young, and Hayward Mayor Cooper to propose creating a regional greenhouse gas action plan at Alameda County Conference of Mayors on Wednesday. Berkeley, CA – Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates and two other Alameda County mayors will formally propose the creation of a regional greenhouse gas reduction plan at the Alameda County Conference of Mayors on Wednesday evening. The effort, which is being done in partnership with KyotoUSA and the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), will seek to have all 14 Alameda County cities adopt a greenhouse gas reduction strategy. Mayor Bates, the current President of the county-wide mayors group, began working with San Leandro Mayor Shelia Young and Hayward Mayor Roberta Cooper on a regional plan while attending a global warming conference hosted by Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson in July. “I am exceptionally proud of the work Berkeley has done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “By setting up a regional greenhouse gas reduction effort, we can work together to make a far more significant dent in emissions and be an example of cooperation for other regions to follow.” Berkeley has been recognized as an international leader in the effort to curb global warming. As part of a peer reviewed study, Berkeley was recently named the third most sustainable city in the country. In September, Berkeley announced that it had reduced greenhouse gas emissions from municipal operations by 14% since 2002. # # # |
