Mayor
Bates Appoints Chair of Committee to Create New Plan for Downtown Berkeley Will Travis, the Executive Director of the Bay Conservation Development Commission, will chair the Downtown Area Plan Committee. Mayor Bates also appointed environmental consultant Juliet Lamont to serve on the 21-member group. Berkeley, CA – Mayor Tom Bates today appointed Will Travis and Juliet Lamont to the City’s Downtown Area Plan Committee. Mr. Travis, who the Mayor has appointed to chair the group, is currently executive director of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC). Ms. Lamont is a Berkeley-based environmental consultant and noted advocate for urban creeks. The Downtown Area Plan Committee is the result of the historic agreement between the City of Berkeley and the University of California to work jointly on a new plan for the downtown. The committee, which is made up of a diverse group of Berkeley residents, will meet for the next 18-months to help craft a plan to guide all new development in the downtown area. Mr. Travis spent most of his professional career working for state coastal management agencies, but he has also worked in the fields of architecture, local planning, private consulting, advertising and public relations. He was a consultant on the master plan for the East Bay Regional Park District, spent 12 years at the California Coastal Commission, and has been at BCDC since 1985, first as deputy director and then as executive director since 1995. Mr. Travis spearheaded the public acquisition of 10,000 acres of privately owned salt ponds along the northern shoreline of San Francisco Bay to be used for one of the largest coastal wetland restoration projects in California’s history. “Will Travis is an environmental leader, a skilled planner, and someone who has demonstrated experience in leading groups of people with diverse interests,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “Will brings 30 years of national, regional and local experience to help lead our effort to plan for the continued revitalization of Berkeley’s downtown. I am honored that he agreed to serve.” Ms. Lamont is an environmental consultant specializing in watershed and water quality issues. She currently manages scientific and public outreach for the state-funded Codornices Creek Watershed Restoration Action Plan and is developing a communications strategy for the major scientific research program of the California Bay-Delta Authority, among other work. Ms. Lamont also served recently as vice-chair of the Sierra Club Executive Committee and as chair of the San Francisco Bay chapter of the Urban Creeks Council. She has a PhD in Environmental Planning from UC Berkeley where she focused on urban environmental planning. “Juliet is a knowledgeable and powerful advocate for urban areas that work in harmony with our environment. We share a deep commitment to seeing downtown Berkeley serve as a model for sustainable development that succeeds economically and environmentally,” said Mayor Tom Bates. The Downtown Area Plan Committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting in November. When the committee completes its work, the draft plan will be reviewed by the Planning Commission and the City Council prior to adoption. Will
