IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Statement
from Mayor Bates on the Death of Meleia Willis-Starbuck “Early Sunday morning,
we lost a wonderful member of Berkeley’s family when Meleia
Willis-Starbuck was killed near the UC campus.
Meleia was a true Berkeley hero.
She was a successful student and talented leader at Berkeley High
School, where she developed a powerful voice for social justice.
Even after she moved on to Dartmouth College, she remained an
active part of our community, returning this summer to work with young
people at the Women’s Daytime Drop-in Center. This is a terrible loss
that is being felt by our entire community.
My heart goes out to Meleia’s family, her friends, and all of the
people she touched during her life. While nothing can undo
this terrible crime, our police department is working around the clock to
bring this killer to justice. For
my part, I will do whatever is necessary to make sure our investigators
have the resources they need to do the job.
However, we also need help from the community.
Anyone with information about the shooting should to contact
Berkeley police at 510-981-5741. A memorial event will be held on Friday, July 22nd at 11 a.m. at Berkeley High School. Exact details will be announced shortly. In addition, a memorial scholarship account has been set up in Meleia’s name for Berkeley High graduates who wish to pursue work in social justice. Those interested in contributing should send checks to The Mechanics Bank at 2301 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, 94704. Checks should be made payable to ‘The Meleia Willis-Starbuck Memorial Fund.’” # # # |
