Mayor Bates to Join 45 Mayors in Salt Lake City for Robert Redford’s ‘Sundance Summit’ on Global Warming

Mayors gather in an effort to turn the tide on global warming during three-day summit. Bates to highlight several innovative Berkeley programs.

BERKELEY, CA – As part of the growing battle against global warming, Mayor Tom Bates will join a bipartisan group of 45 other mayors in Salt Lake City for the Sundance Summit: A Mayors’ Gathering on Global Warming, hosted by Robert Redford, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, and ICLEI.  The mayors will be joined by national leaders, including former Vice President Al Gore, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, and others.

Scheduled for July 10-12, 2005, the Sundance Summit is the quintessence of “Think Globally, Act Locally.” Mayors have been targeted because they can directly influence the energy consumption of cities. “This summit is focused on action,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson. “It’s for mayors to learn how they can make a real difference on this crucial issue and acquire the necessary tools to get the job done.”

Mayor Bates will highlight some of Berkeley’s accomplishments in the effort to reduce carbon emissions, including the planned $100 million Clean Energy Fund, the use of biodiesel fuel, and Berkeley’s success in building a green business sector.

“Global warming is perhaps the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced, but our national government is sitting on its hands,” said Mayor Bates.  “Working together, cities can make a real difference by reducing emissions and by providing a model for others to follow.  Berkeley and other cities are showing that we can save money, build our economies, and save the world.”
