Berkeley
is Named Third Most ‘Sustainable’ City in United States
SustainLane set to name the 10 most sustainable cities as part of United Nation’s World Environment Day. Mayor Bates to accept award at event on the evening of Thursday, June 2nd. Berkeley, CA – The City of Berkeley is being named today as the third most sustainable city in the country by SustainLane, a national organization dedicated to sustainable development and living. The award follows a non-partisan, peer-reviewed analysis of U.S. cities across 12 categories – from transportation to land use. Berkeley’s high ranking was due to impressive marks in planning, transportation, food, energy policy, and other areas. In transportation, SustainLane reported that “Berkeley has the highest combined and individual rates of those who walk to work and bicycle to work of all the cities we studied. No other city was even close. Cycling and walking in town have been much easier with the help of planning and street improvements that included traffic calming features on seven Bicycling Boulevards.” The group also singled out Berkeley commitment to building Berkeley’s sustainable economy as particularly impressive. “In Berkeley, we already have over 200 green businesses — from waste recyclers to solar power companies to restaurants,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “Now we’re moving aggressively to roll out the ‘green carpet’ and put sustainable businesses at the center of our economic development efforts. I am honored that SustainLane has recognized our achievements in this and other areas.” San Francisco and Portland were the first and second ranked cities, respectively. Berkeley narrowly surpassed Seattle for third place. The complete city rankings with detailed explanations are available on-line at the following website: www.sustainlane.com.
