Mayor
Bates and Chef Alice Waters to Show Off Berkeley’s Environmental Legacy
and ‘Edible Schoolyard’ as Part of UN World Environment Day
Select group of mayors and visiting environmental leaders to visit “Edible Schoolyard,” take tour of Berkeley’s environmental success stories, and dine at Chez Panisse on Friday. Berkeley,
CA – Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates and Chez Panisse Founder Alice Waters will
be hosting a group of visiting mayors and other environmental leaders as
part of United Nations World Environment Day on Friday, June 3rd. The visit will include a brief
tour to highlight Berkeley’s environmental legacy, with a special
emphasis on Berkeley’s “Edible Schoolyard”
– a nationally recognized program that integrates organic gardening,
cooking and sharing school lunch into the school curriculum.
The program will ultimately be adopted by all public schools in
Berkeley, touching 10,000 children daily.
Other
elements include a tour of Berkeley’s “garbage to gold” recycling
and reuse programs – including an internationally renowned computer
recycling center and a major city park that used to be a garbage dump.
